Neoteric are a brand new ensemble who aim to bring you new and fresh music. Our rules are simple, we play brand new compositions in an attempt to bring new music to light. Our distinct line up of Brass and Woodwind gives us a contemporary sound and enables us to rehearse, record and perform a broad variety of music. We have compositional influences from Jazz, Classical, Contemporary and many more.

Toby Street

Co-Founder

Toby Street grew up in South East London, He started playing cornet at the age of 8 and went through the Bromley Youth Music Trust learning with Ray Allen, Tim Heywood and Kevin Street.

Toby was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music mainly studying with Paul Beniston and Alistair Mackie. He also completed a joint principal jazz degree from the RCM studying with Martin Shaw and Mike Lovatt.

Toby is a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and performs regularly many leading UK orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He also performs regularly with many other UK orchestras. In August 2018 Toby was delighted to join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as 4th Trumpet.

In addition to his Orchestral work he is also a keen enthusiast of chamber music and is a founding member of the Riverside Brass Quintet and Neoteric Ensemble. He has also worked with London Brass, Superbrass and Septura.

Toby’s commercial work includes large arena performances with Bastille, The Hoosiers, Public Service Broadcasting as well as commercial session work for CD releases, film scores and library music. Toby also regularly performs as lead trumpet with Oompah Brass.

Toby is also a keen composer and an experienced arranger. In the last three years he has arranged Christmas carols for the Philharmonia Brass quintet’s Christmas E-card and also completed brass and vocal arrangements for Michael Mcintyre’s Christmas Show.

 

Rob Buckland

Rob Buckland has crafted a career around his primary work as a saxophonist that defies categorisation. Moving effortlessly between genres, he is in high demand as a classical soloist, chamber musician, contemporary specialist, improviser, arranger, composer, conductor and producer with an international reputation as an insightful and forward-thinking educator. Renowned for a highly distinctive, original sound, combined with an open-minded approach to repertoire and performance styles, his work takes him around the globe in an astonishing variety of musical settings.

He is leader of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, and works with his duo partner, pianist Peter Lawson, his Equivox Trio (adding in percussionist Simone Rebello), the Michael Nyman Band, London Saxophonic, the BBC Philharmonic, RLPO and Halle Orchestras. He has performed as concerto soloist with orchestras and bands across the UK, Europe and the Far East, and has worked with a wide variety of jazz, pop and commercial artists, including Michael Buble, Elvis Costello, Jason Rebello, the Storyhouse Big Band, Andy Scott’s ‘Group S’ and John Helliwell’s ‘Super Big Tramp Band’, of which he is the MD. New projects include a major new chamber music collaboration with world-renowned jazz pianist and composer Gwilym Simcock, and the Neoteric Ensemble, a unique brass and saxophone chamber group performing newly commissioned repertoire. Rob is also building a strong reputation as a creative producer, working with a wide range of artists from solo, duo, chamber ensemble, big band and strings to multi-tracked cross-genre studio albums.

Rob has written a major saxophone book ‘Playing The Saxophone’ based on 25 years of teaching at the RNCM. As a composer and arranger, his works feature on the concert stage, on numerous CDs, and on all of the major exam syllabi. He is Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where, since 1997, he has lead a programme that attracts students from around the world. Sarah Field

Sarah Field ’s work as a trumpeter and saxophonist is diverse and wholly unique. Performances have taken her from playing Glastonbury with British rock band ‘Elbow’ to Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto at the Southbank, London to the UK premiere of Stockhausen’s “Abduction” for saxophone and electronics.

 Performing on a range of instruments Sarah has appeared with “Sting” on his tour of Europe and DVD “On a Winters Night”. She has recorded and toured with English songwriters Guy Garvey, Seal and Ben Howard. Past solo appearances include performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra with Christopher Warren-Green, concerto’s with RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Kwa Zulu Natal Philharmonic in South Africa with Eno Shao and a performance of Ibert’s Saxophone Concertino with the UK’s critically acclaimed Aurora Orchestra.

Richard Watkin

Richard comes from Derbyshire in England and began playing the trombone at the age of 11. He joined the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the age of 16 and then continued his studies under Simon Wills and Eric Crees at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During this time, he became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra until he completed his studies in 2006. Richard then spent six years as a freelance musician before accepting the position of Principal Trombone with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, where he spent two years. After this, he left Scotland to continue his freelance career in London where he has enjoyed a varied career playing with many of the country's finest symphony and opera orchestras. 

In his spare time, Richard enjoys spending time with his family, cooking and running.

Adrian Miotti

Co-Founder

Adrian is one of the UK’s most in demand tuba and cimbasso players. He enjoys a hugely varied freelance career involving orchestral, opera, ballet, chamber and studio playing,as well as being in demand as a teacher.

His orchestral work finds him working all over the UK and Europe with orchestras such as, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The London Symphony Orchestra, The Orchestral of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, The Philharmonia, The Orchestras of the BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestra, The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, The City of Birmingham Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, The John Wilson Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, The Tenerife Symphony, RTE NSO, RTE CO, Orchestra De La Suisse Romande and Mahler Chamber Orchestra amongst others.
As well as his work in the orchestra, Adrian is also in demand as a chamber musician, and can be heard playing with London Brass, Britten Sinfonia, the BBC Big Band, and is currently Principal Tuba of The Symphonic Brass of London.
This passion for chamber music led to the creation of Neoteric Ensemble with its co-founder Toby Street.

Adrian’s busy freelance schedule also sees him featuring in the studio, and can be heard on many film soundtracks including, Avengers End Game, Angry Birds 1&2, Life, Alices Adventures in Wonderland, The Hunger Games, Hotel Transylvania 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jurassic World:Fallen Kingdom, Rocketman, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald, The Aeronauts, Angel has Fallen, Wonder Woman,Godzilla King of the Monsters, Dumbo and more.

A keen educator, Adrian has given masterclasses at both Trinity Laban College of Music and The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, and has taught numerous tuba classes and lessons both at Junior Guildhall School of music and Trinity Laban College of Music.

James Fountain

Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, James Fountain is also Professor of Trumpet at the Royal College of Music, a member of the highly acclaimed brass ensemble Septura and the innovative new music group Neoteric Ensemble.

 James grew up surrounded by music, in particular brass bands and began playing the cornet at the age of three. As a youngster, James was Principal Cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the GUS Brass Band before becoming Principal Cornet with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band aged just 17.

After moving to London in 2012 to study Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, James was appointed as the Principal Trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra just three years later. He was featured as a concerto soloist on numerous occasions with the Royal Philharmonic and other solo appearances have taken him around the world, with concerts in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Kuwait, Japan and the USA, as well as regular trips across Europe.

 Also in demand in the recording studio, James can be heard performing on several Film, Video Game and TV soundtracks collaborating with composers such as Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Alan Menken and Howard Shore.

 After spending five years with the RPO, James accepted the position of Principal Trumpet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra before moving to the LSO in 2021. James’ journey from brass band musician to the LSO’s highly illustrious Principal Trumpet position sees him follow in the footsteps of some of his brass playing heroes including, Philip Cobb, Maurice Murphy, Rod Franks, Howard Snell and Willie Lang.
